Youth and travel sports is one of the fastest-growing corners of tourism — great news for Williamsburg, which was opening a new Sports and Events Center in 2026.
But tournament directors usually sign multi-year contracts with facilities in Richmond and Virginia Beach. And families tend to pick tournaments based on distance, not experience. One parent put it bluntly: “Williamsburg might be a fun trip once. But would anyone come back for a second year?”
That reframed the assignment. This couldn’t just be a logo and a tagline for a new facility. It needed to give families and tournament directors an actual reason to choose Williamsburg — again and again.
[02]The angle
Williamsburg is known for its history. On paper, that felt like a disadvantage — history reads as old, settled, done. Something you visit, not something you compete in.
So we instead leaned its spirit. A spirit shaped by setback and struggle as much as triumph. It’s a story about showing up and giving everything you have, whatever the outcome. That history has a way of inspiring athletes just by being here.
And that’s what makes Williamsburg worth coming back to. Not just all the incredible amenities that are here (though those help) but the fact that competing here feels different.
